Axel Walch
Axel Walch’s clinico-pathological research is related to tissue pathology and can be defined as “reverse translational research” – obtaining new knowledge directly in human pathology and its translation into basic research. “This research approach is predominantly a tissue based evaluation of large cohorts of patients to define and validate predictive, prognostic and diagnostic biomarkers (predictive pathology),” he says, “The aim is to determine the individual response of patients to therapies on the one hand and on the other hand to predict the individual patient prognosis by means of tissue analyses”. His general research interests are the discovery of pathological processes in tissues using microscopic in vitro and in vivo imaging approaches such as imaging mass spectrometry. Of special interest are biological molecules in cancer tissues including gastrointestinal cancer and breast cancer.
