William Tobin
“‘Forensic science’ is an oxymoron,” says William (Bill) Tobin, a forensic metallurgist/materials scientist in private practice with Forensic Engineering International at Lake Anna, Virginia, who has successfully challenged several junk science practices used in courtrooms throughout the decades. Formerly Supervisory Special Agent for 27 years, head of forensic metallurgy operations for the FBI Laboratory, and nuclear research metallurgist for Battelle Memorial Institute and the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA). Bill’s successes include challenges to flawed investigative and forensic practices in both fire/arson investigations, in solder comparisons (after exposure to bombings), and in comparative bullet lead analysis (or CBLA).
