The Analytical Scientist / Power List / 2023 / Mentors and Educators / Jenny Brodbelt

Jenny Brodbelt

Professor of Chemistry, University of Texas at Austin, USA

  • Profile

Meet Jenny Brodbelt

A mentor or educator who has inspired you? My doctoral adviser Graham Cooks continues to inspire me. He seems to have boundless energy – pioneering many new analytical methodologies and advanced instrumentation in vastly different areas of mass spectrometry, encouraging innovation among his group members and collaborators, and has a great spirit of adventure. He treats everyone with respect and enjoys discussing science with newcomers and experts alike.

Qualities of a successful mentor or educator? The knack for motivating people with different mindsets and attributes. Each student or trainee has a different set of goals and life experiences, and figuring out how to guide them to maximize success and achievements is challenging. No single roadmap will work for everyone.

Biggest challenge facing the field? Most analytical instrumentation has become a black box. The ability to build, modify, and trouble-shoot instruments has become increasingly difficult.

Book for scientists? Making the Right Moves developed by scientists affiliated with Burroughs Wellcome Fund and Howard Hughes Medical Institute. It is perfect for those considering an academic career – compiling advice, know-how, and practical information that can be applied to a scientific career.
