The Analytical Scientist / Power List / 2024 / Human Health Heroes / Ying Ge

Ying Ge

Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor, Department of Cell and Regenerative Biology, Department of Chemistry, and Director of the Human Proteomics Program, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA

  • Profile

Meet Ying Ge

Main research aims? To advance top-down mass spectrometry-based proteomics to understand human diseases at the molecular level and identify new targets for diagnosis and treatment.

An exciting frontier in human health and disease… I am most excited about the integration of chemistry, biology, and medicine to provide comprehensive insights into complex biological systems and translate the bench discoveries to the clinic for precision medicine.

Making personalized medicine a reality… Analytical science, especially mass spectrometry-based proteomics, can decode individual molecular signatures, enabling personalized medicine by tailoring treatments to each patient’s unique biological profile and monitoring therapeutic efficacy.

How would you spend a $1 Billion research grant? I would establish a world-leading interdisciplinary research institute, integrating cutting-edge chemistry, biology, and medicine. This institute would tackle the most complex diseases, develop groundbreaking diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, and drive innovation in healthcare.

Most memorable piece of advice? "Always push the boundaries of your research and never settle for less than excellence."
