The Analytical Scientist / Power List / 2024 / Instrumental Innovators / David H Russell

David H. Russell

MDS Sciex Professor of Mass Spectrometry, Texas A&M University, USA

  • Profile

Meet David H. Russell

Main research aims? My research focuses on development of ion mobility-mass spectrometry for studies of structure(s), stabilities and dynamics of large protein complexes, including roles of metal ions and water on each of these properties.

Most exciting trend today? Recently developed mass spectrometry technologies have transcended traditional roles of studies of gas phase ions to studies of large biomolecules in their native solution environment.

A problem that could be tackled interdisciplinarily… Advanced native MS technologies have made possible studies of membrane protein complex-lipid interactions, including the thermodynamics and the role of water of these interactions.

Most memorable advice? Your abilities to explore and understand what is important and what might be possible is defined by your knowledge of contemporary challenges in the field of chemistry, and that knowledge is obtained by reading/studying the chemical literature.
