Paul Mayewski played a key role in one of the most important modern discoveries concerning our interaction with the environment: the concept of abrupt climate change. He is the first person to develop and lead prominent climate research programs at the three poles: the Greenland Ice Sheet Project Two, the International Trans Antarctic Scientific Expedition and the National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Extreme Mt. Everest Expedition. During the pandemic, he focused on the Colle Gnifetti Historical Ice Core Project to explore the intricate interactions between humans and the environment using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-MS.
