The Analytical Scientist / Power List / 2026 / The Top 40 Under 40 / James Grinias

James Grinias

Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Rowan University, USA

  • Profile

Meet James Grinias

Faster chromatography at smaller scales is central to Jim’s research. His group develops liquid chromatography instrumentation and methods, with particular attention to capillary-scale separations, instrument miniaturization, and high-throughput analysis. Current projects are investigating automation and column performance for ultrafast LC methods that could support organic reaction development, catalytic enzyme generation, clinical diagnostics, forensic toxicology, and high-throughput screening.

James is equally invested in how the next generation learns analytical science. “As the number of training options for early-career scientists continues to drop, current leaders in the field must ensure that there are viable ways for students to learn fundamental theory and practice hands-on laboratory techniques,” he says. “Although many see separation science as a mature field, understanding the basics of chromatography and sample preparation will always be essential for developing new analytical methods.”

This marks James’ third appearance on the 40 Under 40 Power List, following recognition in 2018 and 2022. Attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for graduate study proved decisive. Working with Jim Jorgenson gave James a detailed grounding in capillary LC, while coursework in proposal writing, electronics, and the analytical subdisciplines continues to influence his research and teaching. “Most importantly, I met my wife in the analytical chemistry program at UNC,” he says, “and this continues to have an immeasurably positive impact on my life each and every day.”

Retro video games have also found their way into his research. “Part of my interest in applying microcontroller boards and single-board computers to analytical platforms stems from many discussions with colleagues about using the same devices to play retro video games,” James says. “On occasion, we find time to play these games during breaks in the lab!”
