Meet Pierre-Hugues Stefanuto

Pierre-Hugues develops analytical technologies that turn exhaled breath into clinically useful information. His work uses breath as a noninvasive window into metabolism and disease, with the aim of enabling personalized, patient-friendly monitoring for chronic conditions such as asthma.

“What excites me most is bridging analytical innovation and clinical impact,” he says. His research brings analytical scientists, clinicians, and engineers together to develop robust, scalable solutions suited to clinical use. “As emerging technologies mature, we have a unique opportunity to translate scientific advances into tangible benefits for patients.”

Pierre-Hugues is concerned that analytical science remains underrepresented in higher education and is “too often perceived as a supporting discipline rather than a driver of innovation.” This contributes to a shortage of well-trained analytical scientists at a time when rigorous measurement, validation, and data quality are crucial to addressing reproducibility. He also believes academia undervalues interpersonal and organizational abilities. “Scientific excellence is essential, but communication, leadership, and management are often what determine whether ideas translate into real impact,” he says. “These competencies should be developed much earlier.”

Rather than pointing to a single defining event, Pierre-Hugues credits encounters with people from different disciplines. “Working in translational research constantly exposes me to new perspectives that challenge how I think about science,” he says. “Those exchanges have shaped my research, broadened my expertise, and fueled my passion for lifelong learning.”
