Director, Analytical Development, Structure Therapeutics
Tao spent more than 12 years at Genentech, most recently as a Senior Principal Scientist, where she developed analytical technologies based primarily on separation science and mass spectrometry to characterize complex pharmaceutical systems and emerging therapeutic modalities. Her work focused on building a fit-for-purpose understanding of drug candidates, accelerating development timelines, and safeguarding therapeutic quality and patient safety. In August 2026, she joined Structure Therapeutics as Director of Analytical Development, bringing that experience to new drug development challenges.
“I am most energized by the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of increasingly diverse and complex therapeutic modalities,” she says. “While these systems present unique analytical challenges, tackling that complexity is precisely what drives innovation.” For Tao, this work has a clear human purpose: “Knowing that our daily efforts can potentially change or even save someone’s life gives every analytical challenge we face a deeply humbling sense of purpose.”
Looking ahead, Tao expects the convergence of advanced analytical technologies and AI to have a defining impact. She anticipates “lab-in-the-loop” workflows in which high-throughput, multi-attribute analytical data continuously train predictive models, allowing analytical insights to guide synthesis, formulation, and method development in real time.
“The industry often treats analytical science as a support function within the drug development pipeline,” she says. “In my view, analytical science is far more than simply conducting routine measurements and collecting post-experiment data. Instead, it is the central engine driving biopharmaceutical innovation. Across every stage, from early discovery to late development, and from process optimization to formulation design, advanced analytical technologies provide critical molecular- and product-level insights to enable decision making and propel pipeline forward. In addition, through integration with AI and cross-functional collaboration, analytical science can intelligently and iteratively shape drug development. Ultimately, analytical science doesn't just evaluate therapeutics; it actively creates the knowledge and confidence required to bring them to market faster.”
