The Analytical Scientist / Product Profiles / 2016 / Rapid VOC and SVOC sampling from solids and liquids

Rapid VOC and SVOC sampling from solids and liquids

Rapid VOC and SVOC sampling from solids and liquids

The Micro-Chamber/Thermal Extractor is a compact unit with up to six small cylindrical chambers for the sampling of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs and SVOCs) emitted from materials. The sorbent tubes on which the chemicals are collected can be used with thermal desorption–gas chromatography instruments, allowing rapid assessment of emissions from a variety of materials, while avoiding the delay and expense of sending samples to third-party testing laboratories. The Micro-Chamber/Thermal Extractor is perfect for analysts wishing to carry out rapid production-line emissions screening of consumer products, car trim and construction materials. It is suitable for the monitoring of chemical emissions as part of routine quality control, by allowing results to be correlated with those obtained using longer-term reference methods. The range of applicability also extends more widely, to the checking of raw materials, comparison of related products, and aroma profiling of foods or fragranced materials. Sampling using the Micro-Chamber/Thermal Extractor is simple – bulk materials are simply placed in each chamber, with complete extraction of VOCs and SVOCs being assured by the application of a flow of heated air or gas. The application range is further extended by accessories that allow surface-only sampling or permeation testing, while compatibility with reactive chemicals is assured by the construction from inert-coated stainless steel. The Micro-Chamber/Thermal Extractor can also be used with DNPH cartridges for formaldehyde monitoring.
