Gas Chromatography – Vacuum Ultraviolet (GC-VUV) spectroscopy is a recent innovation introduced in 2014 as a universal detection platform for gas chromatography. Virtually everything absorbs in the vacuum ultraviolet region (120 – 240 nm) measured by VUV detection. VUV light absorption creates unique spectral signatures in the gas phase that result in unambiguous compound identification and linear quantitative analysis. The unique capabilities inherent to GC-VUV help to solve common gas chromatography problems such as correct isomer identification, poor selectivity, long method run times, analyte co-elution, burdensome data processing and analysis, and method scalability to production environments. What follows is an overview of the GC-VUV toolkit and how it addresses these challenges across a wide spectrum of complex applications.
