Improved Characterization of Perfumes with GC×GC-TOFMS

LECO's Pegasus® 4D GCxGC-TOFMS is a powerful tool that brings a number of benefits to analysis. Ultimately, it provides more information on more analytes within a complex sample and allows the user to see what is missing in comparison to a GC separation. In this application note, a commercial perfume sample was analyzed with GC and GCxGC-TOFMS, and the quality of information was compared. Without an increase in separation time, GCxGC yielded information on 375 peaks compared to the 145 peaks that were observed in the GC data above the same S/N threshold. Furthermore, TOFMS acquisition with deconvolution allowed the user to see non-targeted analytes and mathematically separate coelutions in the GC-analysis. Analytes with important odor properties that were missed with the GC separation were detected by GCxGC, allowing the user to confidently discover even more about their sample.
