Designer drugs – with their unknown combination of potentially lethal compounds – create particular problems for physicians. Nicholas Manicke and his team at Indiana University-Purdue University are developing a new low-cost mass spec cartridge that can provide both qualitative and quantitative blood sample analysis in approximately 30 seconds – with the aim of delivering on-the-spot screening and rapid treatment in emergency rooms.
