5 – Agilent 1290 Infinity III Hybrid Multisampler

Feed Injection technology for enhanced HPLC/UHPLC performance

Produced by Agilent Technologies

The Agilent 1290 Infinity III Hybrid Multisampler introduces Agilent’s Feed Injection technology to HPLC/UHPLC workflows. Feed Injection continuously infuses the sample into the mobile phase stream, directly at the point of injection – enabling precise control over sample delivery, while minimizing solvent effects, and improving chromatographic performance. The system enables accurate detection of trace-level compounds, such as PFAS, by maintaining peak integrity even with high-volume injections of strong solvents. And by eliminating the need for additional sample preparation, the Hybrid Multisampler aims to simplify workflows and enhance reproducibility.

What the judges say…

“Versatile autosampler, supporting both routine and research labs.”

“Provides the first integration of multiple important LC injection modes.”

Insights from product manager Juan Liang-Schenkelberg

Please introduce yourself and your role

I am Juan Liang-Schenkelberg, the product manager of the 1290 Infinity III Hybrid Multisampler.

What inspired or sparked the idea behind this innovation?

The inspiration came from listening to users – their pain points sparked the idea to bring this advanced capability of Feed Injection into a format that’s practical, scalable, and solves everyday problems. Innovation, to us, means bridging that gap between potential and usability.

What impact could your innovation have?

Our innovation – the 1290 Infinity III Hybrid Multisampler with Feed Injection – makes high-quality analysis possible where solvent effects previously limited performance. By enabling higher injection volumes without compromising data quality, it delivers dramatically improved results – with customer-proven sensitivity gains of up to 20×, all without additional sample preparation.

Did you collaborate with any external teams or partners?

Yes, we collaborated closely with customers during development. Their early feedback, based on real-world testing, helped us refine the product for maximum usability and value. This collaboration was key to positioning the Hybrid Multisampler for specific application needs and ensuring it truly solves the challenges users face.

Any innovation lessons you’d like to share?

Innovation means thinking beyond standard solutions. This project taught us that the most impactful innovations come from creatively addressing problems that lack good answers. By challenging conventional approaches and focusing on real user needs, we created a unique solution that no other vendor offers – one that truly makes a difference in everyday analytical work.

Do you find yourself driven more by scientific curiosity or the desire to make an impact?

It’s both. Scientific curiosity drives us to explore new possibilities, but the real motivation comes from making a meaningful impact. This innovation is a perfect example – born from creative thinking and shaped by real-world challenges, it delivers a unique solution that truly helps users where no good option existed before.

What’s next for your team – or for this innovation?

The Hybrid Multisampler is already delivering exceptional results, but we’re not stopping there. Based on customer feedback, we’re focused on making it even easier to use – adding more intelligence to automate routine tasks and free users to focus on creative, high-value work. Our goal is to keep evolving the product to meet real needs and maximize impact.
