Small Wonder
I spy, with my little eye... a strontium atom in an ion trap. Electric fields hold the atom in place between the needle tips, while its absorption and re-emission of photons from the blue-violet laser make it visible as a tiny blue dot. David Nadlinger, from the University of Oxford, won first prize for the photograph in the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)’s national science photography competition.
