The Power List 2021
Robert O. Lawton Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry, Founding Director and Chief Scientist, Ion Cyclotron Resonance Program, National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Florida State University, USA
Instrument you couldn’t live without? Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer because it’s the world’s highest resolution mass analyzer, enabling determination of chemical formula from mass alone.
Heroes/mentors? My coworkers: students, postdocs, staff, and faculty colleagues. They have guided me into new techniques and applications, and kept us at the forefront of the field.
Advice? Don’t choose a project because it looks easy. Everything turns out to be hard anyway, so you might as well aim for something important!
