Advice? Today, research is more and more driven by the application rather than by fundamental understanding of the phenomenon. In my opinion, an equal importance should be given to both aspects to make successful research. Communication is also an important aspect of modern research. So, do not hesitate to spread the word on social networks or elsewhere on what you are doing in the lab!
Biggest breakthrough? The biggest advance in analytical chemistry in the last 10 years is the democratization of MS, which is becoming easier to use, available in many laboratories, and offers great promises in many fields (understanding of systems biology, characterization of complex biopharmaceutical products, analysis of traces in environmental or food matrices, and so on). Today, MS is revolutionizing analytical chemistry, and can be easily combined with chromatographic, electrophoretic or ion mobility approaches to further improve its possibilities.
