Biggest breakthrough? After a decade in microseparation sciences with capillary electrophoresis coupled to MS in the 1990s, I discovered Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance MS in the early 2000s – versatile high throughput applications to profile simultaneously and rapidly tens of thousands of small molecules in food chemistry, environmental sciences, space chemistry and health metabolomics, describing the chemical diversity of biomes and abiomes. Real breakthroughs have been made over the past 10 years to boost resolution and sensitivity in magnetic resonance-MS systems.
