The Power List 2014

Alexander Leitner

Senior Scientist/Researcher, Institute of Molecular Systems Biology, Department of Biology, ETH Zurich, Switzerland.

Calling: “I was attracted to analytical chemistry and particularly mass spectrometry early on. Then I moved towards biology because this is one area where analytical scientists can have a huge impact.”

Regret: “Depends on my mood actually. Us Austrians have a tendency to complain...”

Emphasis: “The development of advanced mass spectrometric methods for studying protein structure, function and interactions; predominantly using chemical cross-linking.”

Advice: “Do not expect your career path to be a straight line – and don’t be afraid of interdisciplinary projects!”

Top 40 Under 40

In 2013, we compiled a list of the Top 100 most influential analytical scientists – an endeavor that received a significant amount of attention and, it’s fair to say, caused more than a little controversy. Our 2014 Top 40 Under 40 list almost halves the average age of the celebrated individuals, with many of them born in the same year as the iconic Sex Pistols cover – 1977.
