There are two prominent methods for determining the molar mass of polymers: column calibration (including conventional and universal calibration) and advanced multi-detection. While the conventional and universal calibration principles are more commonly used, the techniques present some major limitations. There is, however, a more comprehensive method of GPC analysis independent of column calibration and retention volume – the advanced multi-detection principle. In this technique, light-scattering is combined to viscometry and refractive index detectors to determine absolute molar mass, molar mass distribution, molecular size (Rg and Rh), intrinsic viscosity, and many other structural, conformational, and architectural properties of polymer chains in solutions.
